Our Counter-Archive Project revolves around banned books and the circumstances why they were banned. We are focusing on three time periods where censorship was used as a tool by an influencing power and made a big impact on the affected community. Our three time periods are World War II Germany, American Civil Rights Period, and the Modern Day America.
Our overall archive is censorship and our specific counter-archive is book banning by government or extensions of government. Censorship can be enforced in different ways by different groups in power, therefore banning is also a broad term. The types of banning we are focusing on vary and include: complete removal from a specific country where one is not aible to purchase or even find the book, limited availability of a book because of discrimination and fear in the community, removal from educational curriculum in government-funded public schools.
